It's been over a week now I've totally fallen for an american pop/rock song full of guitar and made for US FM mass appeal, what is really not my usual cup of tea.
It is the first single released off the debut album of last year's American Idol winner, Kris Allen, and it is an incredibly catchy piece of soulful pop/rock number with a chorus that gets inspiration by slam/rap too. All this would have usually made it nearly impossible for me to like this song but this special mix had an instant appeal that made my heart melt completely : I'm truly addicted to it now and listen to it day and night on continuous play...
In fact, Live like we're dying is a cover version of a japanese bonus track on the first album of the irish band The Script. Kris Allen's version is very faithful to the original, but the explanation must be because it has been produced by the original co-producers Andrew Frampton & Steve Kipner, note for note.
Indeed, That may be a key point, although I didn't know it before ; Andrew Frampton used to be part of the Pete Waterman's post SAW PWL writing & producing team and is the one who gave Steps Love's got a hold of my heart & Never say never again as well as most of Natasha Bedingfield's hits (Single, These words, I bruise easily...). That man has been in the music business behind the scenes for a while now, co-writing & co-producing with maestro for various artists (including several other tracks with The Script) to release good soulful pop music.
To come back to Kris Allen, the 24 year old boy has a cute face, a nice voice but more noticely a special way to put his soul into his music and that's what gave him the winning place last year on the show. His rendition of Bill Withers' Ain't no sunshine was absolutely perfect !
I don't care much for the rest of his debut album right now but I may give it a a try once in a while soon...
To help you get into the song, I think it can help if you can sing along with him (or simply try to follow the fast rhythm of the chorus) so here are the lyrics :
Sometimes we fall down, can't get back up
We're hiding behind skin that's too tough
How come we don't say I love you enough
Till it's too late, it's not too late
Our hearts are hungry for a food that won't come
But we could make a feast from these crumbs
And we're all staring down the barrel of a gun
So if your life flashed before you, what would you wish you would've done
Yeah, we gotta start
Looking at the hands of the time we've been given here
This is all we got and we gotta start thinkin' it
Every second counts on a clock that's tickin'
Gotta live like we're dying
We only got eighty six four hundreds seconds in a day
To turn it all around or to throw it all away
Gotta tell 'em that we love 'em while we got the chance to say,
Gotta live like we're dying, Oh
And if your plane fell out of the skies
Who would you call with your last goodbye
Should be so careful who we left out of our lives
So when we long for absolution, there'll be no one on the line
Yeah, we gotta start
Looking at the hands of the time we've been given here
This is all we got and we gotta start thinkin' it
Every second counts on a clock that's tickin'
Gotta live like we're dying
We only got eighty six four hundreds seconds in a day
To turn it all around or to throw it all away
Gotta tell 'em that we love 'em while we got the chance to say,
Gotta live like we're dying, Oh
Like we're dying, Oh like we're dying
Like we're dying, Oh like we're dying
We only got eighty six four hundreds seconds in a day
To turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell 'em that we love 'em while we got the chance to say,
Gotta live like we're dying
You never know a good thing till it's gone
You never see a crash until it's head on
All these people right when we're dead wrong,
You never know a good thing till it's gone
Yeah, we gotta start
Looking at the hands of the time we've been given here
This is all we got and we gotta start thinkin' it
Every second counts on a clock that's tickin'
Gotta live like we're dying
We only got eighty six four hundreds seconds in a day
